Book Talks: 9 Weeks Project

The Book Talk is a 9 weeks project. This 9 weeks, students will be assigned a genre or genres of writing. The students will choose a minimum of two books to be read independently (Out of Class Reading Log) and in class during Sustained Silent Reading over the course of the 9 weeks. One of the books which they read for the 9 weeks will be selected by the student to create and present a Book Talk to the class.

Book Talk approval will take place approximately 3 weeks after the assignment of the Book Talk genres so that students have ample time to find an interesting and appropriate book.

Why Project Based Learning?

Students gain a deeper understanding of the concepts and standards at the heart of a project. Projects also build vital skills and lifelong habits for learning such as time management, organization, and communication skills. Furthermore, project based learning: creates a need to know essential subject area content and skills, requires inquiry to learn and/or create something new, requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication, allows student voice and choice, incorporates feedback and revision, and results in a publicly presented product or performance.
